上海市通用外语水平等级考试是一项普及意义上的测试应考者外语水平的考试。考试旨在提高全市市民的外语水平,以适应上海跻身国际化大都市的需要。该项考试设有初级英语、中级英语、交际英语、日语初级、日语中级等语科。每年的1月和7月的中、下旬各举行一次。考试合格后由上海市通用外语水平等级考试办公室颁发由市教委、成教委、市委组织部、市人事局联合印制的证书。该证书具有很强的权威性。据悉,持有此张证书的中学生出国留学去签证,已得到外国领事馆的认可;还有不少企事业单位把此证书列入职工在岗,评职的必备。考试自1994年1月开考以来,报考者踊跃,到去年底人数已达42万之多,合格率超50％以上。为方便报考者,通用外语办公室在全市各学校设有试区。若有问题,考生可直接与各试区学校联系。
Shanghai General Foreign Language Proficiency Test is a universal test of the test language proficiency test.
