Although serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) assays are not generally predictive of disease activity in patients with chronic hepatitis, this issue has not been fully elucidated in anti-HCV positive patients. This condition may be clinically relevant because only serum ALT is measured when routinely assessing the efficacy of interferon in the treatment of HCV-associated chronic hepatitis. The authors studied 288 asymptomatic anti-HCV positive individuals, of whom 15 had normal ALT (6 consecutive tests within 6 months), while others had elevated ALT (1.5 to 4 times the upper limit of normal) ).
