The U.S. New York Times reported on May 6, 1980: Growing mouse embryos on laboratory plates at about half the normal gestational time has shown that three substances are crucial to normal embryonic development. After years of exploring this discovery, scientists can help better understand the basic causes of human defects. Most of these causes are still not clear. New research suggests that it is possible to prevent pregnancy failure and birth defects by manipulating these important chemicals. Research shows that each of these chemicals must be present in the right amount at the right time. When any of the three chemicals are missing or under-sized, the embryo is about to die, fails to develop, or begins to show severe variations in its congenital defects.
