The structure of chitin is compared with that of cellulose, and the possibility of forming a liquid crystalline state is indicated according to the structure and chain rigidity. The main chemical modification routes necessary for the preparation of liquid crystalline chitin derivatives are briefly introduced. The effects of lyotropic liquid crystal behavior and structural factors of 15 chitin derivatives on the critical behavior of their liquid crystals are described. The main liquid crystal states of chitin derivatives, such as fingerprint-like texture, alternating polarization field texture, texture and structure of droplet, as well as the thermotropic phase of chitin derivative / dichloroacetic acid solution change. The chitin fiber formation and liquid crystal spinning were reviewed
