美国科幻作家罗伯特希克利曾经描写过关于“万能制造机”:一台奇特的大机器,机身上杂乱地安装着刻度盘、小灯和各种指示表。故事的主角之一阿诺尔德站在机器前,按下按钮,对着机器响亮而清楚地说:“我要硬铝螺帽,直径为4厘米。”接到指令,机器发出低沉的轰鸣声,灯光闪烁,闸板缓缓打开,眼前赫然出现了一颗闪光发亮已经制好的螺帽。
