From impassioned speech to lingering love, human language can express endless emotion. However, where did the language originate? This issue has plagued scientists. Recently, Shigeru Miyagawa, a linguist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, published a paper in Frontiers in Psychology that proposed an “integrated hypothesis” about the origins of human languages. (Integration Hypothesis) that human language is derived from a combination of two communication systems in the animal kingdom: the expressive system used by songbirds and the lexical system used by monkeys.
