Clod with brick and granite trim, the buildinghas a raised facade on the maior entrancewall featuring four cirdes in a horizontalrow—the lower half in sculptured relief witnthe upper part above the roof line an archlikecut-out.The semi-circular openings are re-peated in a row above the granite-pavedarcade with one reaching down to the graniteentrance steps,making an arched entrance tothe colonnade.The facade fronts the first of four steppedrectangles,creating a three-dimensional grid.These rectangles graduate down and awayfrom the street toward the early 20th centuryL.D. Sweat Memorial Building and the 19thcentury Clapp and McLellan Houses, all part ofthe art complex.Linked to the older gallery byan infill stucture,the addition defines twooutdoor garden spaces,A cylindrical sculpturestudio with glass walls projects out from theiiknk and into the garden space,becoming abackdrop for the landscaping.Walkways arebrick paved in a herringbone pattern.inside,the dever combination of 20-foot-square modular spaces,separated by six-foot-wide interstices,creates rooms that oremost pleasant and,in keeping with thecommunity’s size,both intimate and important.
