在二千多年以前,孔子率领他的弟子们周游列国,谋求施展才华、治理天下的机会.他们师徒走到卫国,其弟子子路问道:“卫君待子而为政,子将奚先?”孔子回答说:“必也正名乎!……名不正,则言不顺;言不顺,则事不成;事不成,则礼乐不兴;礼乐不兴,则刑罚不中;刑罚不中,则民无所错(措)手足.”(《论语·子路》)他们走到齐国,齐景公向孔子讨问政治之事,孔子回答说:“君君,臣臣,父父,于子.”(《论语·颜渊》)这个思想,也就是历史上十分著名的“正名”思想.
