The so-called “well-off” originated from “Book of Rites”, which refers to a kind of well-to-do society that ranks second only to the ideal society of “Datong” and contains the vision and expectation of the Yan and Huang daughters for a happy life. Now that we are saying “a well-off society” is a concept put forward by Comrade Deng Xiaoping in 1979, since then the term “well-to-do” has become a well-known synonym of good life and has become the common pursuit and yearning of the people. Even the world is very concerned about the magnificent project. Fortunately, the millennium dream of this people finally came to the end of the twentieth century. According to the indicators stipulated in the “Basic Standard for a Well-to-do Life of the People”, by the end of 1999, China has completed 94.6% of its total intake of food and clothing. It is estimated that by the year 2000, the overall national average will enter the initial stage of a well- Three-quarters of people can lead a well-to-do life. National Bureau of Statistics began to study well-off issues in 1991. A book << China’s Well-off Road >> (China Statistics Press has been published) documented the achievements of the Task Force over the past decade unremitting efforts. As a reporter, I pay close attention to the process of getting well-to-do but do not want to say others. I want to know that in the new century, our country will enter a well-off society in an all-round way. By that time, what should our life be like? On this topic, I interviewed Luo Jianguo, deputy director of the Institute of Statistical Science of the National Bureau of Statistics, who has devoted himself to well-to-do studies.
