Drugs that inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) slow the progression of renal insufficiency in patients with diabetic nephropathy, but it is unclear whether they have the same effect on other kidney disease patients. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the ACE inhibitor benozepril on the progression of renal insufficiency in patients with various renal diseases. Subjects and Methods A prospective, double-blind, randomized, 3-year trial of 483 European hospitals was performed on 583 patients with renal insufficiency due to various conditions, 300 of whom received benozepril daily
