This article describes the entire smelting process for the recovery of copper and cobalt from converter slag at Rocca Smelter. The red hot coke reduction slag produces an iron-cobalt-copper alloy suitable for wet processing. Hydrometallurgical separation of the components of the alloy. During pressure oxidation leaching, the iron is removed from the hematite; copper is recovered from the leachate by means of solvent extraction and electrowinning; and cobalt is crystallized from the raffinate as cobalt sulfate hexahydrate. Crystallization with electrolyte solution, purified by conventional electrowinning extraction of metallic cobalt. This process has evolved to the engineering stage and has proven to produce high purity metals with high recovery and low reagent consumption.
