作为纸和印刷木的故乡,中国古代很早就已具有发达的出版事业,同时也产生了书籍交易活动。东汉时京都洛阳书肆便是迄今见于记载的最早的书店。到唐代,经济、文化的繁荣发达使书籍交易更趋活跃,书店遍布全国各地,经营的书籍品种也已十分丰富,有经书、文集、杂记、历书、字书、阴阳占卜等类。当时书籍交易既可以实物交换,如布 As the hometown of paper and printing wood, ancient China had long been a well-established publishing business and also had book trading activities.
