Objective To investigate the clinical value of POSSUM scoring system in assessing the incidence of postoperative complications and mortality in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. Methods A total of 171 patients with gastrointestinal cancer were scored on their physical and surgical invasiveness immediately after operation to predict the postoperative complications and the risk of death. The actual incidence of postoperative complications and mortality were also observed. Compare with the predicted value. Results There were 75 cases predicted by POSSUM score and no significant difference compared with 96 cases with actual complications (P = 0.3529). POSSUM score predicts 22 cases of death, compared with the actual death of 17 cases, the difference was not significant (P = 0.3326). Conclusions POSSUM score can better evaluate the prognosis of gastrointestinal cancer surgery.
