康柏和Dell公司于11月2日推出的4路服务器采用了400MHz Pentium Ⅱ Xeon处理器,均可节约占地空间,但供货期较短。希望通过采用Intel公司新型芯片进入高端和企业计算市场的PC厂商因为推出4路Xeon服务器而缓步不前,其原因是Xeon工作在4路配置时还有微瑕。Intel公司就此表示,改变该芯片的电路以解决这一问题。康柏发布的新款ProLiant 6500可支持4路Xeon,并可与其它5款6500服务器连接,运行Oracle基于服务器的并行应用。新款服务器将比以前的型号节约占地空间,并提供分离的按键以控制独立的扩展插槽,从而使得操作更加简单。康柏将于明年一季度推出8路Xeon的服务器和运行Windows NT的Alpha服务器。
Compaq and Dell Inc. launched on November 2 4-way server using a 400MHz Pentium Ⅱ Xeon processor, can save space, but shorter lead-time. The PC makers hoping to enter the high-end and enterprise computing markets with new chips from Intel Corp. have been sluggish with the introduction of a 4-way Xeon server due to the slight pitfalls of Xeon working in a 4-way configuration. Intel said in this regard, change the circuit of the chip to solve this problem. The new ProLiant 6500 from Compaq supports four Xeon and can be connected to five other 6500 servers to run Oracle’s server-based parallel applications. The new server will take up less floor space than the previous models, and provide separate keys to control individual expansion slots for easier operation. Compaq will introduce the Xeon 8-way server and the Alpha server running Windows NT in the first quarter of next year.
