At the first International Conference on Environmental Mutagenesis, we reported preliminary observations of chromosome aberrations in lymphocytes in 40 plutonium workers and controls (Mutation Res 21: 211, 1973). The study has now been expanded to over 200 plutonium workers and controls (> 30,000 cells). In the vast majority of cases, routine counting of dicentric dots + circular chromosomes is not a good indicator of biological response to this type of chronic exposure.
