1978年,在北京举办的“全国工艺美术展览会”上,有一方“秋瓜鸣虫”石砚,造型新颖,刀法刚键,具有浓厚的生活气息,吸引了不少中外观众。这块紫色带青、有美丽金星的石砚,就是著名的紫云砚。紫云砚是歙砚的珍品之一,产于皖浙边界的天目山西麓,地层为震旦系,地质时代距今约6—17亿年。紫云砚的岩性为紫色含粉砂板岩,绢云母和其他鳞片状矿物达76%,砂级碎屑4%,粉砂级碎屑及微粒石英20%。硬度3—4,比重3.02。紫云砚不仅有发墨快、不损毫的特点,而且颜色美观并有翠色的纹理和斑点。有的紫中带翠,有的翠中夹紫,彩云飘飘,金星点点,故名“紫云砚”。制砚艺术家们根据砚石的质地、色泽和云纹,雕成一方方富有浓厚地方色彩和诗情画意的石砚,深受中外人士的好评。
