戏曲以“记”为名出现于宋元,在明传奇里极为繁盛,成为传统“记”体具有戏曲特色的吸收和发展。戏曲制题史上“记”的被选择,显示了形成中的戏曲文体观念。“记”所具有的记史、记事、志怪、传奇、讽箴等作用为戏曲所肯定,特别它对叙事功能的强调、对虚实关系的处理深为明代曲家认可,而“传”“纪”等倾向完整或顺序志人、强调真实性的文体类型则逐渐与戏曲走上两途。“记”与“纪”“传”的分野,成就了戏曲叙事性的发展,反映了传奇体制成熟化规范化的过程。“记”的创作追求和美学特色,与中国叙事文学的发展密切相关。“记”的普遍使用因此成为明传奇文体自觉性的重要标志,同时也促进了中国戏曲形式与风格的形成和确立。
