In the United States, strokes are the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability. Stroke-induced brain injury is caused by multiple pathways that have complex interactions, including excitotoxicity, acidosis, electrolyte imbalance, peripheral infarction depolarization, oxidative and nitrification stress, inflammatory responses, and apoptosis. For stroke, there are few effective treatments available now. Then, exploring new therapies requires a full understanding of the mechanisms of various ischemic insults. This article discusses the basic pathophysiological processes of stroke, revealing that therapeutic interventions can target complex pathways.
