The second Governor of Guangdong and Guangxi who presided over the Guangzhou War during the Second Opium War was one of two Chinese people under Marx’s writings and the only one Governor-General who was abducted by foreign enemies during the Qing dynasty. The fall of Guangzhou and the captivity of the Governor, the Chinese people naturally put all their grudges on the head of Ye Mingchen, whom the literati even more ridiculed as “six non-generals.” However, Marx gave Yeh high appraisal on the stand of internationalism. In fact, how does Ye Mingchen evaluate whether he “does not fight unjustly?” Why is he willing to be captive of British people? This is actually a mystery. This article explains these questions.
