The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is located in the northwestern part of the subcontinent of South Asia. It has an area of 803,000 square kilometers and a population of 90 million people. The rural population accounts for 72%, and the population under the age of 15 accounts for 46%. The ratio of urban population to rural population is 3:7. The national administration is divided into 4 provinces, 10 federal districts and 1 federal district of Islamabad. The province consists of prefectures and counties (also known as districts and sections). Each section includes towns and villages, divided into districts by population and region. In 1986, the per capita GNP was US$380. The nation’s economic income mainly depends on agriculture. Agricultural products include wheat, rice, cotton and sugar cane.
