目前,绝大部分高等院校计算机房都安装有硬盘信息保护卡和网卡,由于1999年国际PC新标准已经淘汰了ISA插槽,今后将全部采用PCI插槽,因而选用PCI硬盘信息保护卡和PCI阿卡是用户必须考虑的问题。为了降低成本,少占用PCI插槽,作者进行了将硬盘信息保护卡和PCI阿卡结合在一起的尝试,并取得了成功,且保护卡和网卡的功能互不影响。网卡选用优质PCI插槽,传输速率为10MB/s或100MB/s类型;保护卡采用即插即用,不占用硬盘空间,支持Windows95/98/NT,Windows2000和Linux等操作系统,瞬间还原C:盘信息类型。PCI网卡的启动芯片(EPROM)为27256,该芯片的容量为32KB,由于网卡本身的程序未将32KB占满,因而可以将保护卡程序加入。
