电影是以视觉形象为主的艺术,在表现空间、时间和运动中,电影造型手段的运用,无疑是非常重要的。电影造型艺术的特征和其它造型艺术如绘画、建筑有很大不同。电影是动的艺术,镜头的内容总在运动着,构图也是很不稳定的,运动就产生变化,所以在每个电影画面内所表现出来的各种美的形态,大都与运动和变化有着密切联系。另外,电影艺术的主题是靠许多镜头组按在一起体现的,每一个镜头画面都只是蒙太奇链条上的一个环节,是造型蒙太奇结构的一个构成元素。美的形式规律也就要在镜头画面前后运动、变化过程中体现出来。爱森斯坦说:“蒙太奇单位……是统一的总的主题的某一部分的面面,这总的主题是以同等的程度贯串着所有这些单位的。在一定的蒙太奇结构里,这些部分的细节的对列就促使那个总的东西在人们的感受中浮现出来。”(《爱森斯坦论文选集》351—352页)
