唐弢同志在《影印本<申报·自由谈>序言》(《新文学史料》1981年3期)中谈到《申报·自由谈》上发表了许多“美丽的诗一样的散文”时说:“我以为这方面首先应当提到的是艾芜,他以岳萌、刘明、斐儿等笔名,先后为《自由谈》写了为数不少漂亮的散文,形式有游记也有速写,边陲风光,异国景色,一一映入笔底,给人以耳目一新的印象。” 其中“斐儿”这个笔名我们感到很生疏,曾就此请教艾芜同志,艾老也说不是他的笔名。细查《申报·自由谈》上,“斐儿”发表了不少写新嘉坡及南洋一带的散文,记述他到过菲律宾、爪哇、苏门答腊等地,足迹几乎遍及南洋各
