北京故宫建成于明代永乐十八年(1420年),是明清两朝的皇宫,有24代皇帝在这里居住,达500年。1925年起改为故宫博物院。 历经570多年沧桑变迁保存至今的故宫,在其72万余平方米的总面积中,有14万余平方米是那些以木结构为主的宫殿建筑群,这些宫殿建筑高大,屋宇林立,布局严谨,门户封闭,楼阁檐廊相接,长街深巷。明代初建的三大殿曾起名为奉天殿、华盖殿、谨身殿,至清代改名为太和殿、中和殿、保和殿。其中太和殿(俗称金銮殿)是三大殿中最大的一座,它总高度为35.05米,横宽63.96米,纵深37.2米,共72根立柱,其中六根为缠龙金柱,典型的砖木结构、尖顶重檐宫殿式建筑。 根据记载,明代200多年间奉天、华盖、谨身三殿先后三次被火烧毁,重建三次,末次重建工程晚在天启七年(1627年)才完成。
