敦煌遗产包括敦煌石窟与敦煌文献两类,它所蕴含的知识信息是百科全书式的,对敦煌遗产的研究形成了百科全书式的敦煌学。敦煌研究院在敦煌文物研究方面取得了一大批成果,为敦煌学走向世界做出了贡献。为了推动新世纪敦煌学的发展,敦煌研究院将在“世界一流的遗产收藏,世界一流的遗产保护,世界一流的遗产研究,世界一流的遗产展示与服务功能”的目标导引下,把敦煌研究院建成世界一流的国际敦煌学研究重镇。
