礼和乐是构成西周社会的两大柱石。孔子在《礼记·乐记》中言到:“乐者,天地之和也;礼者,天地之序也。”礼构成社会生活里的条理和秩序。青铜器铭文的线条,将大自然里启示着的和谐、秩序表现得淋漓尽致且富有情感;乐,则蕴涵着群体内心的和谐与团结力。而礼和乐最后都表现出形而上的“宇宙意识(天地境界)、生命情调,以至政治的权威、社会的亲和力”(宗白华:《美学与意境》)。
Etiquette and music constitute the two pillars of the Western Zhou society. Confucius said in “Book of Rites Music”: “The musicians, the harmony between heaven and earth, the ceremonies, the order of heaven and earth also.” “Rituals constitute the rules and order in social life. Bronze inscription lines, the nature of the enlightenment of harmony, the order showed the most vivid and full of emotion; music, which contains the group’s inner harmony and unity. At the end of the ceremony, both music and music showed metaphysical ”cosmic consciousness (world realm), life style, political authority and social affinity" (Zong Baihua: Aesthetics and Artistic Conception).
