在外滩的老明信片上,曾有一个地标性要素,即建立于1924年的和平女神像。像的碑座背面刻有八个汉字:“功炳欧西,名留华夏”。这八个字,是对外滩建筑群影响力的的极好概括:名垂中外史册。当时的上海,乃世界之都,抬头看一眼当年外滩汇丰银行的门厅顶部,那八幅彩色马赛克镶拼成的壁画,分别描绘了20世纪初上海、香港、伦敦、巴黎、纽约、东京、曼谷、加尔各答八大城市的建筑风貌,由此可推知昔日上海的辉煌。
