This paper deals with the scope in search of the substitutes for phenol-formaldehyde resin used in shell-moulding process under the present Chinese conditions. The experiments of the Shell-moulding process for the phenol fraction-furfural resin, Which already has been used in plastic industries, are carried on along the following aspects: (1) tests for the properties of the resin and the resin-sand mixture; (2) tests for improved methods of shell-making techniques on the base of the ream-sand mixture. The experimental results indicate that phenol fraction-furfural resin could be used as a substitute for phenol-formaldehyde resin under certain controlled conditions. The grey iron castings poured with the phenol fraction-furfural resin shell moulds have the same surface finishes as those obtained from phenol-formaldehyde resin and better ecomonical effect. As the amproved methods of shell-making techniques (like pre-coated sand etc. )are employed, the repuired amount of phenol fraction-furfural resin used in resin-sand mixture could be less than 6%.
