本文运用后殖民主义作家霍米·巴巴的“第三空间”理论,分析美国华裔女作家任璧莲《典型的美国佬》中主人公拉尔夫一家自我身份的重构以及中美两种文化一定程度上的融合。在不同时期的中美文化观影响下,他们寻梦过程中所发生的价值观、生活方式和身份认知等的交错杂糅性转变表明了文化身份的流动性。任璧莲认为身份总是处于不稳定的变动之中,没有固定不变的本质。
