UK workers are among the least stressed in Europe, a survey has suggested. Just 20% of British workers found their workplace “too stressful” compared with an average of 27% across Europe. Switzerland and Sweden suffered the highest levels of anxiety in their jobs (33%), the survey by global recruitment(招聘) agency Kelly Services found.
The survey of 19,000 people across 12 countries also found that male workers, older staff and those in steady jobs were under the greatest pressure. “A certain amount of stress is inevitable and can be a good thing when it pushes people beyond their comfort zone to work harder and smarter,” said Steve Girdler, marketing director of Kelly Services UK. “But high levels of long stress are not good because they impact on productivity and lead to physical and emotional illness,” he warned. The group also found stress increased significantly with age-rising from 19% in the 15-24 age to 23% for those aged 45 and above. The report suggested these workers could also be suffering from added stress at home and increased responsibility. Those working the longest hours found their job the most stressful—18% for those working 30 hours or less, 34% for those clocking on for 41-50 hours, and 50% for those working longer than 51 hours. Kelly Services also uncovered a close link between stress and job satisfaction. For those workers who said they faced too much stress, just 28% were happy in their jobs, while for those with “just the right amount of stress” happiness levels jumped to 65%. The findings suggest staff enjoy jobs where they face challenges that push them to “learn new skills”.

People born in the autumn live longer than those born in the spring and are less likely to fall chronically(慢性病) ill when they are older, according to an Austrian scientist. Using census(人口普查) data for more than one million people in Austria, Denmark and Australia, scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in the northern German town of Rostock found the month of birth was related to life expectancy over the age of 50. Seasonal differences in what mothers ate during pregnancy(怀孕), and infections occurring at different times of the year could both have an effect on the health of a new-born baby and could influence its life expectancy in older age. “A mother giving birth in spring spends the last phase of her pregnancy in winter, when she will eat less vitamins than in summer,” said Gabriele Doblhammer, one of a team of scientists who carried out the research. “When she stops breast-feeding and starts giving her baby normal food, it’s in the hot weeks of summer when babies are easy to get infections of the digestive system.” In Austria, adults born in autumn (October-December) lived about seven months longer than those born in spring (April-June), and in Denmark adults with birthdays in autumn outlived those born in spring by about four months. In the southern hemisphere, the picture was similar. Adults born in the Australian autumn - the European spring - lived about four months longer than those born in the Australian spring. The study focused on people born at the beginning of the 20th century, using death certificates and census data. Although nutrition at all times of the year has improved since then, the seasonal pattern persists, Doblhammer said.
60. What did the author mean by saying“... in Denmark adults with birthdays in autumn outlived those born in spring by about four months.”?
A. the life expectancy of adults born in autumn is longer than that of those born in spring in Denmark.
B. the life expectancy of adults born in autumn is shorter than that of those born in spring in Denmark.
C. the life expectancy of adults born in autumn is as long as that of those born in spring in Demark.
D. the life expectancy of anyone born in autumn is longer than that of those born in spring in Demark.
61. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Selecting people born at the beginning of the 20th century by using death certificates and census data.
B. People born in autumn live longer than those born in spring.
C. The month of birth was related to life expectancy over the age of 50.
D. It’s in the hot weeks of summer when babies are easy to get infections of the digestive system.
62. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. A mother who gives birth in summer spends the last phase of her pregnancy in winter, when she will eat less vitamins than in spring.
B. It is easy for the people who were born in autumn to get ill when they are getting older.
C. The research focused on people born in the late 20th century, using death certificates and census data.
D. The author found that in the southern hemisphere the situation was just the same.
63. From this passage it seems that the life expectancy has something to do with_______.
A. nutrition B. seasons
C. vitamins D. digestive system

Why is it that when you go on holiday some members of your family always seem to get bitten more than others? Scientists at Roth Amsted Research in Herefordshire think they may have found the answer and their work could lead to the development of insect repellents(驱虫剂).
James Logan has found that some people give off “masking” smell that prevents mosquitoes from finding them. His research builds on earlier studies on cattle, led by Roth Amsted’s Professor John Pickett, which showed that the number of flies on a herd depended on certain cows being present. The scientists found these unattractive cows gave out different chemical signals from the others. When these cows were moved to another field the number of flies afflicting the herd increased.
James, working in collaboration with Professor Jenny Mordue at the University of Aberdeen, tested the behavioral reaction of yellow mosquitoes to smell from human volunteers. James said, “The mosquitoes were placed into a y-shaped tube and given the choice of moving upwind down either branch. The air flowing down one branch was mixed with smell from the hands.”
Their results suggest that different attractiveness is due to chemicals in unattractive individuals that switch off attraction by acting as repellents. This theory differs from that of other research groups who have suggested that unattractive individuals lack the attractive chemicals. The researchers are now testing these theories further using sleeping bags to collect whole body smell from volunteers. James said, “By identifying these key chemicals and understanding how they work we could be closer to new methods of protection from these biting insects that cause losses in livestock(家畜) and irritation(发炎) and illness in humans.”
James said, “We hope that the work with cattle and mosquitoes will lead to methods of controlling such biting insects that cause losses in livestock and irritation and illness in humans.”
64. Which of the following can be used to replace the underlined word “afflicting” in the second paragraph?
A. satisfying B. troubling
C. comforting D. killing
65. The writer mainly wants to tell the readers___________

B. James’ research shows the number of flies on a herd depended on unattractive cows present.
C. earlier studies on cattle proved the number of flies on a herd depended on attractive cows present.
D. earlier studies on cattle proved the number of flies on a herd depended on unattractive cows present.
67. What can you conclude from the passage?
A. James has succeeded in finding out new ways of preventing humans being bitten by insects.
B. Doing experiments is a good way to test a theory.
C. James’ research is based on earlier studies on cattle.
D. James has persuaded some persons to collect body smell for his research.

In an interview, England football captain Beckham admitted his six-year-old son Brooklyn’s maths homework made him befuddled.
Beckham, 30, admitted to being puzzled when Brooklyn recently asked for help with a school assignment and had to turn to his former Spice Girls pop star wife Victoria to help out.
“Their homework is so hard these days. I sat down with Brooklyn the other day, and I had to turn it over to my wife, ‘Victoria, maybe you should do the homework tonight.’ ”

It is a reply to a letter written by Zhai Mingjun, a 16-year-old girl in the class. The two astronauts thank the student for her concerns and wish the class luck in their future studies.
“I’m so happy that the two space men replied with a few encouraging words,” said Zhai. Her letter was one of the 10 winning letters taken into space by Fei and Nie, who have succeeded in traveling space in the Sixth Shenzhou Spaceship. Zhai wrote the letter as if she were a younger sister of the astronauts. “As the single child in my family, I always hoped that I would have an elder brother that I could be proud of,” Zhai said. “I thought that the astronauts would be lonely during such a long space trip. I hoped they would feel happy and warm when reading my letter.” Many of Zhai’s classmates also wrote their words of encouragement and admiration to the astronauts. “The letter to the astronauts made us believe that we can also be part of the manned space programme,” said Zhao Dongxu.
All the students have high expectations for China’s future space programme. “I heard that Snoopy is the mascot(吉祥物) for US astronauts. I hope I can design a mascot for our heroes,” said Liu Mengjie, 16. “A physics class taught by astronauts in outer space would be very interesting. I want to be the astronaut who teaches students about zero gravity with my head upside down in the spaceship,” said Han Yinan.
Many students think that the manned space programme is still far away from them. But they feel proud that ordinary students can participate in such a great scientific achievement and hope there will be more possibilities to take part.

“It’s done totally differently to what I was taught when I was at school, and you know, I could say nothing but ‘Oh my God, I can’t do this.’ ”
“Brooklyn said, ‘Please do it with me.’ and I could say anything else but‘I’ll read your book with you.’”

The Mail on Sunday gave examples of some national curriculum maths questions set for seven-year-olds. They include; “Betty went to the shop at 11;45. She came back half an hour later. What time did she come back?” and “What is 12 divided by three?”
Beckham also admitted he has no “lucky” pre-match routines (fixed and regular way of doing things), with them too being tough to remember. “I find that if I follow a routine ... it gets to the stage where you are thinking, ‘Right, is it the left side ... the left boot that I put on first, or the right side?’ There are so many things that can go through your mind.”
