Enterprise-class applications like e-commerce, data warehousing and groupware document management have pushed the limits of the current 4-way Wintel server’s processing power. To alleviate this processing pressure, ALR and Axil Computer are preparing to extend the symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) design of more than four configurations to provide ample hardware space for increased application processing. According to ALR officials, the company’s recently announced 6-CPU Revolution 6x6 server is based on two boards each with three 200MHz Pentium Pro processors. These two CPU boards are plugged into the ALR’s 64-bit Parity SMP bus to ensure that each processor takes advantage of ALR’s Dynamic Orchestration arbitration technology to have equal access to the bus. Axil, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai Electronics, has been marketing SPARC systems and in March will also introduce its Intel-based 8-way Windows NT server based on its adaptive memory cross architecture. Both ALR and Axil plan to sell their respective patent licensing technology. Both Unisys and DataGeneral are planning to introduce systems based on ALR designs. Although Axil’s officials did not announce their partnership, it expects OEMs to release the news this fall. Other architectures in this area, such as cluster technology and cached coherent inconsistent memory access (ccNUMA), are highly available and scalable
