《后汉书》史料来源丰富,体裁不一而足。范晔对其时流行的史体进行分析,尤其比较了编年及纪传体的优劣,故《后汉书》在总体的谋篇布局、裁夺体例方面呈现独特鲜明的特征;在对“纪”、“传”二体的纂修方面,范晔也较《史记》、《汉书》有了新的创格:增设《皇后纪》;在人物列传的编纂上,更加强调以类相从,大量增加类传、合传;“一事不两载”的基本原则及三种具体方法的成功运用。
