费信是明朝的使者,曾同郑和七下西洋,多次横跨南海。南沙费信岛以他名字命名。费信根据多年丰富的航海经历,写出了《星胜览》一书,提出航行南海“上怕七洲,下怕昆仑”:七洲水急,昆仑风狂;针迷舵失,人船莫存。浩瀚的南海,有多处七洲,在海南岛东海岸的抱虎岭外有个七洲洋,七洲洋有七洲列岛。在西洋的宣德群岛也有个七洲,七洲洋面有个上七屿。那里的海域被泛指为七洲。七连屿海域多礁石,狼藉杂乱,退潮时一望无际。古人讲:千里黄沙,万里石塘。
