Objective To study the effects of sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) on cerebral blood flow and brain function. Methods 30 elderly patients with matched age, gender and underlying diseases were selected as SAS group and 32 as control group. SAS is diagnosed by polysomnography. Akerson multi-function color Doppler was used to measure the blood flow velocity and spectral shape of bilateral anterior, middle and posterior arteries. Results There were significant differences among the 9 indexes in systolic (SAS) group and control group (Vs), peak diastolic blood flow (Vd), mean blood flow velocity (Vm) and resistance index .05 ~ P <0.01), SAS group blood flow spectrum abnormalities increased. Conclusions SAS has a slowed cerebral blood flow velocity and abnormally increased frequency spectrum. It suggests that SAS can induce cerebral insufficiency, cerebral arteriosclerosis and easily cause cerebrovascular diseases such as ischemic stroke.
