In 1981, the Defense Department will spend about 200 million U.S. dollars on the research of high-energy laser weapons. The investment in 1982 may exceed 300 million U.S. dollars. However, such a substantial increase did not satisfy some critics, who demanded a much accelerated plan to lead the development of space-based laser weapon systems. If such systems can be reliably manufactured to destroy the majority of intercontinental ballistic missiles in flight, their strategic importance will be immeasurable. Currently, the Department of Defense provided about 98 million U.S. dollars for the study of space laser weapon systems. However, as technology has not evolved and the major military equipment program has lagged a long time ago, the Pentagon said that even if such weapons are feasible, they will not enter the battlefield until the 1990s. Critics say this is too slow, and their arguments are twofold: Space laser weapons are likely to be built in much less than estimated by the Department of Defense and well below the estimated cost, and we need such weapons
