龙岩市是全国著名的革命老区,所辖的7个县(市、区)都是当年的中央苏区县。从土地革命战争时期直至全国大陆解放,龙岩的党组织和武装斗争一直坚持、土地革命果实长期保存,赢得了“二十年红旗不倒”的赞誉,为新中国的建立作出了巨大牺牲和重大贡献。全市有革命基点村610个,在册革命烈士2.4万多名,占全省烈士总数的一半多。新中国成立后授衔的开国将军有68位,占福建全省将军总数的82%。
