含铁石英岩古风化壳型富铁矿以矿石含铁量高(50~70%)和规模极其巨大(可达数十亿吨)称著.从矿石构造结构和物质成分特点来看,它具有以下与其他类型铁矿石不同的鉴别特征:1)矿石具有疏松多孔状构造、粉末状构造(反映从含铁石英岩中淋滤溶解走的石英等多于充填沉淀进来的赤铁矿、针铁矿、水赤铁矿和其他氢氧化物等物质)和豆状、肾状等胶状构造.2)矿石有害杂质含量很低-矿石中P、S、Cu、Pb、Zn、Sn、As、SiO_2等有害杂质含量很低是与变质铁矿原生矿和使贫矿变富的风化作用产物
