Purpose:The purpose of this Meta analysis study was to evaluate whether the use of 18F-FDG PET can lead to accurate diagnosis of Small Cell Lung Cancer. Materials and methods:A Meta analysis study was designed to examine the role of 18F-FDG PET(PET or Hybrid PET/CT)in the diagnosis of small cell lung cancer.Nine eligible studies were selected with a total of 644 patients(409 men,235 women, age range 30-89 years)with SCLC.The sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy of 18F-FDG PET,and 18F-FDG PET/CT was calculated using Meta-Disc software version 1.4(Hospital Ramon Cajal)and SAS version 8.0(SPSS,Inc,Chicago,IL). Results:The sensitivity of 18F-FDG PET was found to be 80.8%and had a specificity of 93.1%.The Summary Receiver Operating Characteristics curve shows a diagnostic accuracy Q* 88.68%,AUC of 0.9473. The sensitivity of the studies which used 18F-FDG PET in the diagnosis of SCLC was found to be 89.8%and specificity was 93.8%.The diagnostic accuracy of 18F-FDG PET in the diagnosis of SCLC as shown in the sROC curve was Q* 91.93%,AUC of 0.9697. The sensitivity of the studies which used 18F-FDG PET/CT in the diagnosis of SCLC was found to be 86.9%and specificity was found to be 92.6%.The diagnostic accuracy of 18F-FDG PET/CT in the diagnosis of SCLC as shown in the sROC curve was found to be Q* 88.70% and AUC is 0.9474. Conclusion:The results of this study shows that 18F-FDG PET and 18F-FDG PET/CT have a high sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy in the diagnosis of SCLC.18F-FDG PET can be used as a standard diagnostic tool of small cell lung cancer.
