The relationship between translation and culture is inseparrable.Language is part ofculture,so translation of language can not but be involved in tianslation of culture.Sincelate 1980s, with the fast development of economy and telecommunication, people in theworld have become more.Cultural study has become a world trend.Translation studies becomemore and more culture-oriented.In recent years, in China, there have been some articles written on therepresentation of the cultural elements in the original language. Most of these articles areon word and phrase level. But the conveyance of foreign cultural elements is on alimited scale. This thesis expoundsand proves the necessity and possibility of introducing foreigncultural elements systematically on both word and phrase level and on sentence levelwhich, since sentence order reflects peoples mode of thinking, is also part of culture. The essay is composed of four parts. In the first part the inseparable relationshipbetween translation and culture is expounded, including "the relationship betweentranslation and culture","the important role of translation in introducing foreign culturesin the history","culture-oriented translation—the call of time" and "the turn oftranslation studies toward cultural orientation".The second is mainly a comparison ofthe two cultures on word and phrase level and the three main ways in introducingforeign words and phrases. The three main ways are"literal translation","transliteration"and"transference".While in the third part,a comparison is made of the two languageson sentence level, which reflects peoples mode of thinking through sentence order andis part of culture. The comparison is made mainly on the different placement ofattributives and adverbials between English and Chinese sentences. The fourth part is theconclusion,in which some of the relevant controversial questions are distinguished andcleared up,such as culture-oriented translation and total foreignization, culture-orientedtranslation and literal translation and so on.Every translation theory has its drawbacks. So is culture-oriented translation.Someproblems Still exist in culture-oriented translation. For example, words games, riddlesand dialects that are language-based or culture-specific are the common problems facedby all translators.Intercultural communication is the premise of culture-orientedtranslation.So with the development of intercultural communication,culture-orientedtranslation will become the natural and inevitable choice of serious translators. Culture-oriented translation fits not only with the translation of foreign languages toChinese, but also Chinese to foreign languages. At the same time we introduce foreigncultures to Chinese people,we should introduce to the world our Chinese culture that isbroad, profound and unique.
