Since the end of cold war, the issue of humanitarian intervention has been at the forefront of international relations. This is due to the human rights violations and massacres witnessed in some countries like; Kosovo, Darfur, Rwanda and Libya.Hence, the international community is burdened with the responsibility to handle the security and welfare of fellow human beings. The concept of humanitarian intervention and the Responsibility to protect has been criticized as a disguise for western imperialism due to some cases of selective intervention where the western powers stood without intervening if no interest was at stake or no timely response initiated in places where there was massive massacre.A lot of critics however contend that there is nothing humanitarian and that it is usually motivated by selfish interests, ideological disposition, imperialistic aggressions and hegemonic influence. This dissertation hopes to join in the debates that have been spawned as regards the efficacy of humanitarian intervention in the contemporary international system; it will evaluate the crux behind humanitarian intervention and responsibility to protect. The work will also be deliberating on the idea of humanitarian intervention being abused by powerful states to exploit the weak states.I will posit that despite its inadequacies and how it is executed, it is not enough for non-interventionists to totally condemn humanitarian intervention and R2P at the expense of saving the endangered rather the focus should be on developing a process that could make humanitarian intervention more effective, consistent and viable.
