The financial world today is gradually becoming a global village in itself.The level of offshorebanking in both developing and developed countries today is evidence to this fact.Since thefinancial wheel is critical in any development paradigm, the role of banks is even more critical.Therefore the survival and performance of banks is of much interest not only to policy makersand shareholders, but to researchers as well.The recent financial crisis have raised severalquestions with respect to the growing awareness and the need for appropriate operations offinancial institutions.It calls for thorough assessments of the structural frameworks and practicesof banks by regulators, analysts and financial watchers from time to time, to ascertain theadequacy of the systems, policies and procedures for accessing operational performance as wellas their conformity to current best practices.As a contribution to this exercise, this study wasfocused on Ghana Commercial Bank Limited (GCB) with the aim of evaluating the banksoperations as well as assessing its performance to ascertain its soundness and conformity tointernational best practices.This study also investigated whether efficient operation translate intoenhanced performance of banks.Analytical based approaches were adopted in assessing theoperational performance condition of GCB.By applying analytical tools such as ratios, tablesand charts, to the banks 2011,2010,2009,2008 Annual financial statements.Trends andrelationships in the financial statements and other financial data were also established.Thishelped in making well-reasoned analysis of the banks capital adequacy, balance sheet structureand composition, profitability and reliability of earnings, Productivity, liquidity, and the externalinfluences on its operations.The study also revealed that GCB had a fairly adequate Capitalstructures to ensure sound management of financial position and good operations.The study alsorevealed that banks capital strength, profitability, and annual rate of inflation are significant keydrivers of banks performance in Ghana.However, the size of the Ghanaian economy did nothave any significant impact on the banks profitability.
