Neurodegenerative diseases cause damage to several neuromodulatory brain regions that play a key role in learning and plasticity.Identifying the basic mechanisms by which these neuromodulators affect neuronal plasticity can aid in our understanding of how these diseases directly affect cognitive processes such as learning and memory.The mammalian olfactory bulb provides an ideal system for addressing such questions.First, the olfactory bulb receives heavy input from both cholinergic and serotonergic brain nuclei known to be affected by neurodegenerative diseases.
