@@ The objective of this paper is to survey and assess a very specific domain of L2 acquisition, which is assumed to develop within a UG framework. The paper aims to examine the extent to which a theory of UG could to useful in explaining L2 acquisition process and tries to find evidence for the role of UG in L2 acquisition. Two principles of UG are examined in the experimental research, i.e. Subjacency and the Empty Category Principle, two constraints on wh-movement. This experimental project tries to assess the extent to which these two constraints are operative in the mental grammars of Chinese L2 learners of English in acquiring wh-questions.
