Psychosomatic medicine is widely taught in Korean medical schools,where students receive 25 hours of compulsory instruction from psychiatric department:In 1992,the Korean Society of Stress Medicine (KSSM),and the Korean Psychosomatic Association (KPA) were established.Membership of KSSM include multi-disciplinary doctors,nurses,psychologists and Oriental medicine professionals. The membership has grown to 800 professionals as of 2009. Since 1993,the official journal of KSSM,"The Korean Journal of Stress Research" has been a quarterly publication.The KPA admits only psychiatrists as members,and has published "Korean Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine" biannually since 1993.The KSSM successfully hosted the 8th ACPM Congress in 1988 and the 13th ACPM Congress in 2008 in Seoul.The 21st ICPM congress will also be hosted by the KSSM in the summer of 2011 in Korea.in the clinical field,psychosomatic medicine in Korea has been applied in symptom centered clinics like stress clinics,sleep disorder clinics,obesity clinics and eating disorder clinics rather than in psychosomatic medicine clinics.Determining the best system for the treatment of psychosomatic patients is an active discussion topics amongst Korean medical professionals.We hope to learn from other countries in order to incorporate Western,Oriental and psychiatric medicine to create a patient centered psychosomatic model in Korea.
