Earlier studies have shown an increasing incidence of tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) both in the USA and in Sweden.This, in spite of a decreasing prevalence of smoking, a well-known risk factor for this disease.We wanted to investigate if HPV could have contributed to the increased incidence, and possibly could serve as a prognostic marker for patients with tonsillar cancer.To evaluate the oncogenic role for HPV in tonsillar cancer we evaluated the E6, E7 mRNA expression.We investigated diagnostic biopsies from 357 patients diagnosed with tonsillar SCC 1970-2007.Presence of HPV DNA and HPV-16 E6 and E7 mRNA were tested for PCR and RT-PCR.Incidence data for Sweden and in the County of Stockholm was obtained from the Swedish Cancer Registry and survival analyze was estimated by Kaplan-Meier method.
