Objective The electrical coupling among inhibitory neurons through gap junctions (i.e., electrical synapses) presumably synchronizes their rhythmic oscillation and then coordinates principal neurons to encode brain programs.The revealing to the functional regulation of electrical synapses helps understand the programming of neuronal codes in brain plasticity and homeostasis.Methods We investigated the dynamics and regulation of electrical synapses by pair-recording GABAergic cells in hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN).Results (1) The efficiency of electrical couplings between SCN neurons through gap junctions is asymmetric.This asymmetric coupling through electrical synapses is present under various conditions and expresses plasticity.(2) The variances of intracellular Ca2+ signals between these neurons influence their coupling asymmetry.(3)An attenuation of the coupling asymmetry in network neurons leads to their activity synchrony.Conclusion The asymmetry of electrical coupling among GABAergic ceils may confer some of them to be dominant and make network neurons to be asynchronous in outputting electrical signals, such that temporal codes are more widely integrated into the brain programs.
