Following the example of Great Britain, Mexico has promulgated its own General Law on Climate Change on June 6, 2012.The Act contains two parts: the first is based on the determination of reduction goals in short-and long-term greenhouse gas emissions: a 30% by 2020 and 50% by the year 2050 (compared with the year 2000).The legislator seeks to achieve this objective through the generation of renewable energies (as expected for the year 2024, 35% of the electricity generation will come from clean sources of energy), as well as the establishment of a national register of emissions, mechanism through which companies must measure and report their emissions;the second axis is made up of a number of provisions aimed to have the State institutions that develop or encourage the development of public policies enabling them to achieve the objectives of the own law.Mexicos move is bold for a country with proven hydrocarbon reserves for at least 150 years. It shows global responsibility but it will come at a cost.
