This lecture is a review of all available biopsy methods and techniques for non palpable lesions.Breast screening programs are expanding in more and more countries worldwide. As a result, more non palpable lesions will be detected and approximately 4-5% of them will be further assessed by either needle or surgical biopsy.Trying to cut down the cost of unnecessary surgical operations for benign lumps, more training and accuracy is expected.Several interventional techniques are available nowadays and modem technology is taking them even further. How far have we gone till now and where are we heading to? Needle Biopsies need guidance from all available imaging techniques.Ultrasonography, Stereotactic, or Magnetic Resonance, they have all indications and applications. The choice does not affect the accuracy of the method but has to do with the availability, simplicity, cost and patient discomfort. We tend to use the simplest imaging modality that visualizes the lesion. The simplest the method is the faster and more patient-friendly the procedure will be.Ultrasonography is the most frequent mean for core biopsies worldwide. Is fast and available almost everywhere. It is accurate and successful even with Large Core Needle Biopsies (vacuum assisted).Stereotactic guidance is the method of choice for micro calcifications or small lesions that cannot be detected by ultrasonography.
