研究区位于江西省北西部，行政区划属九江地区武宁县，区内的中晚二叠世地层含有丰富的(虫筳)类化石及牙形石化石。通过对该剖面地层中的(虫筳)类、牙形石化石进行详细研究，建立相应的生物化石带或组合，并开展多重地层划分对比研究，对该地区中晚二叠世地层进行准确的划分。
