Mitophagy is a mitochondrial recycling process that primarily promotes cell survival,but can also cause cell death in the presence of prolonged injury.It has been suggested a direct relationship exists between DNA damage and mitophagy, however, the molecular mechanism is poorly understood.In this study, we found topotecan (TPT) activated ATM to induced both DNA damage and mitophagy.Additionally, we observed ATM phosphorylates Beclin 1 directly at Thr57, and that the phosphorylation of Beclin 1 was required for DNA damage-induced mitophagy.
